What is Faith, Hope and Love?
They are virtues that draw us closer to God. Each possessing its own supernatural power, all three work in unison to move mountains, part seas, bring dry bones to life, open blinded eyes and even change the world! Earliest records of it’s existence dates back to creation itself, where the first man was formed in the image of God, out of love. The radical – Paul so wonderfully articulates the eternal quality of these in his first Letter to the Corinthians where he says,
“Three things will last forever–faith, hope, and love.”
1 Cor 13:13a (NLT Version)
But we know that these three have been around forever. So let’s take a closer look at what they are.
This is the first substance that is fuelled by belief. A spiritual grace given by God to acknowledge and believe in His matchless beauty and wonder-working action. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for..” (Hebrews 11:1) It is the confidence of action even before its working. It has the power to go beyond space and time. It challenges the intellect and performs acts of supernatural calibre.
Second to faith, “.. hope is the assurance of things unseen.” (Hebrews 11:1) It is the source of encouragement that allows you to hold onto promises even when things seems unlikely. Hope refreshes the memory and has the power to let you see beyond the physical and witness the glory of the unknown future.
“But the greatest of these is Love.”
This is the third and the most powerful substance known to mankind. Love challenges the will, baffles the intellect and brightens the world we live in. The need to love and be loved in innate. Love is divine, and to love is also divine. “God is Love.” (1 John 4:8) As believers of Christ, we are all called to love.
‘We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.’
– 1 Thes 1:3
Theologically, faith, hope and love are virtues that are instrumental in freeing the spirit from all its attachments. Like St. John of the Cross wrote, faith empties the intellect, hope frees memory and love liberates the will. Inspired by these virtues, we hope to bring life new meaning and encourage soulful living.
